There are two kinds of satellite TV systems prevalent today: TVRO and DBS. TVRO is the abbreviated form of Television Receiver Only system. This is how we have been watching satellite TV since it started. The Direct Broadcast Satellite system is newer and more advanced. Where the TVRO system operated on eth C-Band, the DBS system works on the Ku-Band. The huge dish antennas of yore were the hallmark of the TVRO system. No one could have missed these large metal disks on rooftops. The DBS are sleeker and measure only about 18-inches in diameter in comparison to the several feet of the TVRO dishes.

The satellite TV dish is the mainstay of the satellite TV system. Simply put, it is a parabolic object of solid or perforated metal. The antenna also has a positioner arm that can focus on separate satellites within a two-degree arc. The antenna also consists of a Low Noise Amplifier. This mechanism converts satellite signals from high frequency transmittable signals to low frequency signals for local receivers.
